Indonesia Beaten 0-3 by Vietnam in AFF U-18 Championship Group Stages

Jakarta. Indonesia’s national football team suffered its first loss at the 2017 Asean Football Federation under-18 Championship after being beaten by three goals at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar, on Monday (11/09).

Indonesia showed dominance in the opening minutes but it wasn’t enough to claim victory as a compact Vietnamese defense proved insurmountable.

Vietnam, which only claimed 36 percent of overall ball possession, punished the Indonesian defense in the 41st minute after a volley by Le Van Nam streaked past Indonesian goalie Muchamad Aqil Savik.

Savik, who replaced the injured Muhammad Riyandi, conceded another goal from Van Nam’s back-header just before the half time.

Indonesia struggled to create chances and only threatened Vietnam’s goalie Y E Li Ni E twice in the second half with substitute player Witan Sulaeman’s efforts consecutively in the 78th and 79th minutes.

After 86 minutes, Indonesia conceded again, this time from a header by Vietnamese defender Bui Hoang Viet Anh from a corner-kick set piece.

“What made the difference on the day was discipline,” Vietnamese coach Hoang Anh Tuan said after the game, as quoted by the AFF website. “We respect all teams but we played with a lot of discipline and that is important.”

Vietnam now qualifies for the semi-finals, while Indonesia can still  ensure the runner-up spot in the last group stage match against Brunei on Wednesday.

“We are still confident of reaching the semi-finals, nonetheless we still have one more game to play,” Indonesian coach Indra Sjafri said.
