Chess | Acqua Terme, Italy: 2017 World Chess Championships – Philippines’ Torre wins

Grandmaster Eugene Torre strengthened his title chances in the Open 65+ division of the 27th World Senior Chess Championships after blasting International Master Herman Van Riemsdijk of Brazil last Friday in Acqui Terme, Italy.

Torre needed only 13 moves of a Ruy Lopez game to hike his tally to 7.5 points and join five others at the helm with only a round to go in this tournament.

Torre is tied with Vaisser, Sveshnikov, Jansa, IM Arkady Shevelev of Israel and German GM Lothar Vogt going into the final round.

In the Open 50+ class, GM Joey Antonio drew with defending champion GM Giorgi Bagaturov in 26 moves of a Sicilian duel to share third with 7.5 points, 1.5 points behind GM Zuniga Julio Granda of Peru.
