51th ASEAN: Lim Jock Hoi takes over as the 14th Asean Secretary-General of ASEAN

DATO Paduka Lim Jock Hoi, a top trade official and diplomat from Brunei Darussalam, assumed office as the 14th Secretary-General of Asean on January 1, 2018.

TH He succeeds outgoing Secretary-General Le Luong Minh from Vietnam who completed his term on December 31, 2017, Asean.org said yesterday.

Dato Paduka Lim Jock Hoi was until recently a permanent secretary at the Brunei Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He served as Brunei’s chief negotiator during the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade talks.

Earlier positions included head of trade departments at the then-Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

He graduated from the City of London Polytechnic with a BSc (Hons) in Economics in 1976 and received his Post Graduate Teacher Certificate in 1977. He was awarded the Most Honourable Order of Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei, Second Class (DPMB) in 2007. He is married with two sons.

The Secretary-General of Asean is appointed by the Asean leaders for a non-renewable term of five years, and selected from nationals of Asean member states based on alphabetical rotation.
