ASEAN PHOTO GALLERY: Photo of the Day – ‘The fortune-tellers on the riverside’ By Jean-Francois Perigois– Khmer Times

Late in the afternoon and in the early evenings along one end of the popular riverside area in Phnom Penh, close to the Royal Palace, a thriving informal industry is doing a brisk trade.

Here a group of people known as krou teay bear in Khmer, or fortune-tellers in English, ply their trade.

Using cards, statues, cloth covered in ancient script, incense and other magic charms, these people predict the future for some, give advice on potential partners in life to others and predict a whole host of other things for a small amount of money.

The fortune-tellers mostly work alone and each takes up a small space along one of the capital city’s most popular areas, where locals and tourists like to walk in the cool of the late afternoon or early evening.

Some customers want their palms read, some rely on “magic” card readings and others just go for advice.

People from all walks of life use the services these people provide, and some customers come back regularly, particularly if a particular fortune-teller’s advice or predictions have come true. If the predictions don’t come true, they try a different one.
