HEALTH – The World Health Organization (WHO): VIENTIANE – WHO to provide 20 billion kip for health sector improvement

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has agreed to provide 20 billion kip (US$2.4 million) this year to strengthen the health sector, particularly in the fields of surveillance and response to infectious diseases, mother and child health, and immunization.

A work plan for 2018 was signed in Vientiane yesterday by Minister of Health Associate Prof. Dr Bounkong Syhavong and WHO Representative to Laos, Dr Juliet Fleischl.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr Juliet Fleischl said “I am pleased to announce that this year, the WHO has increased fund ding by about 14 percent from last year.

” This funding support will be used to improve and develop health systems in the country throughout 2018.

The main aim of the support is to sustain the government’s health improvements and contributions to the development of the health sector.

Associate Prof. Dr Bounkong Syhavong said this support affirmed the close cooperation between WHO and the Ministry of Health for the continued development of the health sector.

He thanked WHO for continuing to support the Ministry of Health, particularly through contributions to the surveillance of and response to infectious diseases, mother and child health, and immunization.
