PALEMBANG, Indonesia: Construction of a light rail transit (LRT) line in Palembang, a city in southern Sumatra that will co-host the 2018 Asian Summer Games, is complete and testing will begin this month, a top city official said on Saturday.

Palembang Sport and Youth Board head Ahmad Zazuli said the LRT will be fully operating in August to transport athletes and spectators attending the games to be held form Aug 18-Sept 2, hosted jointly by Palembang and Jakarta.

The almost 24-kilometre LRT will connect the city’s Sultan Mahmud Badarudin International Airport II to Jakabaring Sport City where the events taking place in Palembang will be held.

Palembang will host 10 sports, including wall climbing, roller skating, triathlon, canoeing, and women’s soccer.

To attract spectators to the Asian Games, the Communication and Information Ministry is ramping up distribution of information about tourism destinations around Indonesia, so people attending the event can plan a vacation as well./ 6 May 2018 at 18:57 /WRITER: KYODO NEWS
