Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) has successfully placed Malaysia on the world stage with its Third International Federation of Physical Education (FIEP) Asia Conference on Physical Education and Sports (ACPES) 2018.

Themed “Physical Education and Sports Help Build a Healthy Society”, the conference gathered top scientists, experts and students who shared and discussed ideas, passions and best practices in the field of physical education and sports.

Comprising two keynote sessions, three plenary sessions, six regular sessions, 47 parallel sessions, and 13 poster presentations; the conference also offered ample networking opportunities for participants, which comprised 100 leading experts, inspiring speakers and researchers from over 20 countries including US, UK, Japan, Sweden, Ireland, Singapore, Australia and Slovakia.

TAR UC was given the honour to host the third edition of the conference in partnership with FIEP Europe. This made them the second higher education institution in the world to have ever hosted this conference.

The Education Ministry’s Department of Higher Education director of Excellence Planning for Higher Education Institution division, Prof Dr Raha Abdul Rahim was present to officiate the conference. She commended TAR UC for successfully bringing this conference to Malaysia to promote healthy lifestyles and support Malaysia’s aspiration to become a sports powerhouse.

“Physical fitness is a lifelong activity and there is no better time to collaborate and catalyse the market and interest for an active lifestyle. I strongly believe there is a lot to offer and learn from this conference through its network of contacts, experts and exchange of ideas among individuals and organisations,” she said.

TAR UC vice-president Assoc Prof Dr Ng Swee Chin, in her welcome address, elaborated on the importance of this conference in learning and teaching about physical education.

“I sincerely hope that we can adopt some of the good practices presented at this conference and put them into our implementation plan for the diverse modes of education, including physical education in TAR UC,” she said, revealing that the conference was part of the run-up to TAR UC’s 50th anniversary celebration, taking place in 2019.

During the conference, three staff from the Faculty of Applied Science (FOAS) were presented special awards for their dedication and excellent work in the field of physical education and sports.

Assoc Prof Dr Wee Eng Hoe was conferred the Medial Manuel Gomes Tubino Award for his immense contribution to the field, while Assoc Prof Dr Loke Chui Fung and Dr Ler Hui Yin were awarded the FIEP Commemorative Medal for their contribution to the development of physical education and sports at the international level.

In conjunction with the conference was the Health and Fitness Expo 2018 which was also held within TAR UC’s Kuala Lumpur main campus between May 31 and June 2.

Organised to the theme “Healthy Living for a Better Tomorrow”, the expo featured 27 booths, which showcased across-the-board elements on healthy living.
