Golfer Yuka Saso and the Philippine women’s golf team delivered two gold medals in the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday at the Pondok Indha Golf and Country Club in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The triumphant Saso and the Filipino women’s golf team joined early gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz of weightlifting in the elite circle of gold-medal winners in the 18th Asian Games.

Saso, 17, recovered from a double-bogey on the 17th by hitting an eagle on the 18th hole to post a leading 6-under final-round score of 66 after 72 holes to capture the gold in the women’s individual event with 275 (13-under).

She pushed Chinese early leader Liu Wenbo to a silver finish (73 and 278).

Another Filipino parbuster, Bianca Pagdanganan, ended third for the bronze medal (also 66 and 279).

Saso, a Filipino-Japanese, and Pagdanganan joined Lois Kaye Go to snare the women’s golf team event gold, too, with 554 (22-under, 132 final round).

South Korea finished second for silver with 557 (19-under, 137) and China, third for bronze with 558 (18-under, 145).

The Philippines has so far won three gold and 10 bronze medals, surpassing the country’s one-gold, three-silver, 11-bronze showing in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

“With three total gold medals, the Philippines has surpassed the one gold medal from the 2014 Asian Games. Well done,” Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas said.

Just like Diaz, Saso and two other female golfers are now instant millionaires as they are set to each receive a cash reward worth millions of pesos from different sectors.

A gold medal is worth P6 million — P2 million from the government through Republic Act 10699, P2 million from the Philippine Olympic Committee, P1 million from the Siklab Atleta Pilipinas Sports Foundation, and P1 million from the Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Lee Hoong.

Meanwhile, Dumaan Dines and Jefferson Rhey Loon failed to advance to the gold medal round as they both settled for a bronze medal each after losing to separate rivals in the pencak silat competition at the Padepokan Pencak Silat TMII in East Jakarta.

Dines lost to Malaysian M Nasir Muhammad Faizul, 0-5, in the semifinals of the men’s Class B 50 kg to 55kg division, while Loon suffered defeat from Nguyen Ngoc Toan of Vietnam, 0-5, in the men’s semifinals of the 60 kg to 65 kg division.
