ASEANews: VIENTIANE- Bridge repairs hastened in Luang Prabang

Authorities in Luang Prabang province are speeding up efforts to repair Namxeuang bridge on Road No 13 North as ferry boats are being used to transport motorists and vehicles across the river.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport recently announced the bridge in Viengsavanh village of Luang Prabang city would be temporarily closed for repairs from September 11 to November 11 after a section of it collapsed following heavy rains.

Authorities are now hastening repairs and expect to complete the work soon if there is no more delay caused by heavy rain, officials said.

Heavy trucks or long trucks going to Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, Phongsaly, Bokeo and China via Road No 13 North will use junction three of Xiengngeun and turn left along Road No 4 to Xayaboury province.

This will connect to Road No 4A to Hongsa-Ngeun district of Xayaboury and on to Oudomxay province, according to an official notice.

Buses have been assigned to the Department of Public Works and Transport of Luang Prabang to facilitate the movement of passengers from the two sides.

The damaged section of Namxeuang bridge is being repaired, Director of the Public Works and Transport Department of Luang Prabang, Mr Fasananh Thammavong, told Vientiane Times on Wednesday.

Authorities are using three ferry boats to transport people and vehicles across the river.

The ferry boat service operates from 5am to midnight, he said.
The rate for the ferry boat service ranges from 5,000 kip to 70,000 kip, depending on the type of vehicle and the number of passengers, according to a notice issued by the Department of Public Works and Transport of Luang Prabang.

Motorcycles will be charged 5,000 kip, three-wheeled vehicles 10,000 kip, pickup jeeps 15,000 kip, while the rate for trucks weighing two to fine tonnes, vans and passenger trucks with nine to 15 seats and big tractors is 20,000 kip.

Trucks weighing six to eight tonnes and buses with 20 to 30 seats buses will pay 25,000 kip and ten-wheeled trucks will pay 30,000 to 35,000 kip.

Buses with 30 to 45 seats and 12-wheeled trucks and fuel trucks will pay 40,000 kip and big trucks 70,000 kip, according to the notice.

Motorists travelling north are warned to take care, pay extra attention and drive safely at lower speeds appropriate to conditions while keeping their eyes open for road damage.

Motorists travelling from Xienghon to Khop district in Xayaboury province have been advised to avoid the route after the road was blocked at several places.
