MEN’S BADMINTON: Anthony Ginting Wins 2018 China Open

Jakarta. Indonesian shuttler Anthony Sinisuka Ginting won the men’s single event at the China Open in Changzhou, Jiangsuon Province, on Sunday (23/09) by defeating Kento Momota of Japan in straight sets 23-21 and 21-19.

Ginting took more than one hour to win the game and defeat the world No. 2 badminton men’s single player in the final.

This ends Indonesia’s 24-year winless spell in the men’s single’s category of the championship, last won by Alan Budikusuma in 1994.

Ginting dispensed with China’s Lin Dan in the first round, world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the second round, Chen Long of China in the quarterfinal and Taiwan’s Chou Tien-chen in the semifinal to reach the final.

The 21-year-old Indonesian is currently the world No. 13 badminton men’s single’s player, but he is expected to move into the top 10 in the ranking after his latest win.

“Praise the Lord, I was able to win today. Today’s game was so tight, the score was so close,” Ginting said, as quoted in a statement issued by the Indonesian Badminton Association’s (PBSI) on Sunday.

Ginting trailed 14-19 in the first set, but eventually managed to overtake Momota and win 23-21.

The situation repeated in the second set, when Ginting fought back again, winning 21-19.

“I did not think about how many points I was behind; I only focused on how to play and earn [points],” said Ginting, who received $70,000 in prize money for his efforts. By : Telly Nathalia
