Over 500 respected representatives from ethnic groups are attending the conference to gain an understanding of party-state policies for ethnic people and their contribution to national protection and socio-economic development.

The participants will review the implementation of results of the 2nd National Ethnic Conference (2015-2018) and listen to reports on rural development and poverty reduction, goods production, ethnic development and the experiences of Lao expatriates living abroad.
Some 34 people of Lao descent from overseas will also attend the meeting including those from USA, France, Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Over 400 former national representatives, provincial leaders and other organisations are also invited to attend the conference.

Currently, Laos has 50 ethnic groups after the ongoing session of the National Assembly meeting approved the Brou as an official ethnic group of the nation.

The approval follows the proposal from the government, which has included Brou into the Mone-Khmer family.

The country’s ethnic groups are divided into four main ethnic groupings such as the Lao-Tai family consisting of eight groups: Lao, Phouthai, Tai, Lue, Nhuan, Young, Saek, and Thai Neua.

The Mone-Khmer family has 32 ethnic groups including Khmu, Pray, Singmou, Khom, Thene, Idou, Bid, Lamed, Samtao, Katang, Makong, Try, Trieng, Ta-oi, Yeh, Brao, Harak, Katou, Oi, Krieng, Yrou, Souai, Nhaheune, Lavy, Kabkae, Khmer, Toum, Ngouane, Meuang, and Kri.
The Tibeto-Burmese family has seven ethnic groups: Ahka or Ekor, Singsali, Lahou, Sila, Hayi, Lolo, and Hor. The Hmong-Ioumien category has two main tribes: Hmong-Ioumien and Yao.
