MISS UNIVERSE PANGEANT: BANGKOK- Laos wins national costume category at Miss Universe 2018 contest

Ms On-anong Homsombath, the Lao entrant in the Miss Universe 2018 contest which took place in Bangkok, Thailand, last week has delighted the Lao public by winning the National Costume category of the hotly-contested pageant.

.
After her win was announced yesterday, Ms On-anong said she greatly appreciated the support she had received and thanked everyone for their backing.

She said she was proud and happy to have taken part in the pageant and to have won the Best National Costume prize.

News of On-anong’s win is spreading on social media and everyone is congratulating her on her success in putting Laos in the limelight on the international stage. Her prize-winning costume was inspired by the kinnaly – a half human and half bird representation taken from folklore. The kinnaly dance was also updated for the show to represent Laos’ performing arts.

The costume was designed by Mr Saykeo and Ms On-anong’s make-up was applied by Mr Khamphee Arankarn.

The concept of the costume was based on a “robot open hat dance” technique and weighed 40 kg.

Mr Ponsinh Boutkaska, who assisted Ms On-anong during the competition in Thailand, said it cost more than 30 million kip to design and display the costume.

The creators of the costume used the occasion to thank everyone who had donated to the relief effort in the wake of the dam collapse in southern Laos in July.

“Through this costume we want to thank everyone, both in Laos and other countries, for helping Laos during this time of disaster with their generous donations,” said a person familiar with its design.

The costume was revealed at the pageant in Thailand last week along with costumes worn by contestants from 92 other countries. Ms On-anong’s turn on stage allowed her to showcase the splendour of Lao art forms and generated a good response from other contest participants and the Lao public.

Designer Mr Saykeo said he felt sorry for Ms On-anong having to wear an outfit that weighed 40 kg, but observed that she was very patient throughout the process.

Thanks were given to the team from Prime Modeling, Mr Saykeo who designed the costume and Mr Khamphee Arankarn who made the outfit, as well as Ms Fon who accompanied Ms On-anong to Bangkok, for all their help before and during the competition.

Ms On-anong received coaching in walking, standing in public places, and answering questions in English. Last year, a contestant from Vietnam won the Best National Costume prize.

The Philippines’ Catriona Gray was the overall winner of the event and was crowned Miss Universe 2018. She was one of the top three finalists along with Miss South Africa and Miss Venezuela and was handed the title after answering the question “What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your life and how will you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?
