LAW & COURT: VIENTIANE- 191 telecom fraud suspects deported to China

Police on Friday deported 191 Chinese nationals on suspicion of telecommunications fraud, following investigations by Lao and Chinese police.

Acting upon information received from members of the public last month, Chinese police discovered that a group of Chinese nationals was conducting fraudulent activities in Laos.

Deputy Director General of the General Logistics Department, Brigadier General Khammao Lachanphet, said police raided nine locations where telecommunications fraud was reportedly taking place. They detained the 191 suspects, including 31 women.

The suspects were found to have been masquerading as bank officials or company staff to extort money from other Chinese nationals by setting up money transfer service accounts and then stealing the money they were supposed to transmit.

The handover of the group to the Chinese authorities is in line with a cooperation agreement signed between Laos and China in 2010.

Last year, Lao police handed over 104 Chinese nationals also suspected of telecommunications fraud to Chinese authorities after police from the two countries raided six facilities in Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

The group was found to have been masquerading as law enforcement officials to extort money from people in China through telephone calls, according to police.
