VIENTIANE – Oudomxay ramps up efforts to become a tourist hotspot

Oudomxay authorities are accelerating their attempts to put the province on the tourism map and improve the attractiveness of various locations so that the area features more highly on visitors’ itineraries.

Deputy Director of the province’s Information, Culture and Tourism Department, Mr Bounkuan Mitmeuangxay, told Vientiane Times on Monday that the authorities are planning improvements at the Nam Kat Yorla Pa resort, and Vat Pha Chao Sing Kham and Vat Phou That Lattanamingmeuang temples.

They also plan to improve access to places such as Chom Ong cave, which is located more than 40km from the provincial capital near a Khmu village.
The Khmu are one of the 50 ethnic groups in Laos.

In addition, authorities will improve the homestay experience for visitors, especially those hosted by the area’s ethnic groups, while services at restaurants and places of accommodation will also be upgraded.

The province is also working with Chinese tour operators to bring more Chinese visitors to Laos. At the same time, authorities are working with local companies to promote tourism in local and foreign media, while some Chinese companies are investing in tourism development and promoting tourism in selected sites along the Mekong River.

There are many places of interest to visitors in Oudomxay province, such as the Nam Kat and Tad Talae waterfalls, which are popular with locals and foreigners alike.

Other places of note are Singkham Buddha temple and Vat Phou That Lattanamingmeuang temple where devotees can offer up a prayer and marvel at their architectural beauty.
Visitors can also enjoy delicious local dishes, such as soup pak (vegetables cooked with sesame, ginger and chilli) and som seen sai mai phai (pork with chilli and garlic stuffed in bamboo stems).

There are also plenty of attractive souvenirs, including cotton products made by ethnic groups.
Oudomxay is located in northern Laos, 583 km from Vientiane. It is accessible via all-weather roads that allow tourists to experience stunning views and fresh air. The province can also be accessed by plane.

During Visit Laos Year 2018 more than 212,600 visitors from Laos and other countries visited the province, generating revenue of more than US$13 million, according to the Oudomxay provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department.
