Expert says hosting may rack up US$20b bill, transport networks would require overhaul

An Asean World Cup would be a boost to the region on numerous fronts, but a number of issues need to be addressed before a realistic proposal can be put forward.

Social media has been abuzz with frenzied discussions on the feasibility of the idea, after Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha announced last Sunday that South-east Asian countries will jointly bid to host the World Cup in 2034. He made the declaration after meetings between leaders at the Asean Summit in Bangkok.
