I. If your cabinets are in desperate need of a revamp, but you don’t have the budget just yet to replace them, why not consider a DIY paint job? This project is a great way to update your cabinets and make them look brand new without spending too much. Just a simple, fresh coat will transform your entire kitchen. It might be a little exhausting, but the rewards will be worth it.

  • II. To complete a cabinet makeover, you will need a paintbrush and a small roller. You may also opt for spray painting. While it tends to dry much faster, spray painting is also more complicated, so assess your skills before proceeding down this path! To begin, empty your cabinets and clear out your kitchen counters. Cover your appliances and backsplash.

  • III. Next, remove the hinges, drawers, and doors from your cabinets. Label each item as you go to make it is easier when it comes time to put everything back together. Have a worktable in your kitchen; you will need this to paint the doors. If you do not have a worktable, you may use 2×4 boards propped on boxes. Otherwise, a piece of drop cloth works too.

  • IV. Start by scrubbing your cabinets to take off residue and grease. Using 100-grit sandpaper, smooth out all surfaces and then wipe off any dust with a cloth. Be sure to prime the boxes, drawers, and door fronts before you start painting. This vital step will make your cabinets look like they were done by a professional.

  • V. Once the primer is dry, you may start to apply your paint using an angled brush or a mini foam roller. Use a latex satin finish as it is easier to work with than oil paint. Work in sections using your angled brush, and finish it off with the roller. Use fine-grit sandpaper for one last sanding and add a coat of satin polycrylic for that added durability. Once your paint has dried, you may reinstall the drawers and doors.

  • VI. As we mentioned earlier, another option is to use spray paint. You have to do this outside of the house though, or in a space where overspray and drift won’t cause an issue. When spray painting the cabinets, you can follow the same instructions listed above, but instead of using a paintbrush or a foam roller, you will use your spray paint. It’s worth brushing up your skills on cardboard boxes first to be sure you can coat a surface evenly without creating unsightly drips.
