Car sales up by 2.1pc in first half of year

The Sultanate has seen a 2.1 per cent increase in the number of cars sold in the first half of this year (January to June 2019) where 5,812 units were sold compared to 5,690 units in the same period last year, ASEAN Automative Federation (AFF) figures revealed.

However, June saw a big drop in sales to 846 units, down by 13.5 per cent compared to the same month last year where 978 units were sold. April too faced a contraction of 5.4 per cent where 869 units were sold compared to 919 units last year.

May still topped the list with 1,202 units sold (up by 15.3 per cent compared to the same period last year), followed by January with 1,053 units (up by 17.7 per cent) and March with 1,039 units (up by 6.5 per cent).

Overall last year, Brunei sales added 0.2 per cent annual growth to 11,226 units from 11,209 in 2017.

In ASEAN region, Thailand contributed the biggest sales with number of cars sold reaching 523,770 units followed by Indonesia with 481,557 units and Malaysia 296,334 units in the first half of this year.

In total, car sales in ASEAN nations are stagnant. Last year, countries in the ASEAN region sold 1,692.151 units in the first half (January-June 2018), only rose 0.1 per cent to 1.693.854 units to date this year (January-June 2019).
