“Our school has prioritised environmental education along with the teaching of other subjects because it is essential to teach our children to respect and protect the environment from an early age,” she said.

.
Living in the city, she said students had little knowledge about the natural environment, so the school had planted more than 100 species of trees which children nurture and study.

“There is also a vegetable and herb garden and a small rice field where students can learn how to grow rice, and we teach students how to produce microorganisms by mixing food waste from the school canteen with brown sugar which we use as a natural fertiliser,” Ms Aly said.

.

Other initiatives include education on the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) of waste management with garbage sorted into recoverable resources and students making trays from used plastic bottles.

As a result, the school won first prize in a competition for the creative design of reusable items.

.

The government and other organisations have also recognised their achievements in environmental education with the school awarded second and third class Labour Medals and several students have excelled in the country’s Excellent Student competition.

.
Ms Aly thanked the Ministry of Education and Sports and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, especially the Department of Environment Quality Promotion, for their guidance and acknowledged all those involved for their valuable support to the Asean Eco-School Award.
