WASTE WATER: PHNOM PENH, Cambodia- Japan grants $27 million for construction of wastewater treatment station in Choeung

Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Porn Moniroth and Yuichi Sugano, Chief Representative of JICA Cambodia today signed a grant agreement for the implementation of a Sewerage System Development in Phnom Penh, worth approximately $27 million.

According to a joint press release issued after the signing ceremony, the project is aimed at filtering the wastewater before discharging it into the river through the construction of a wastewater treatment station in Phnom Penh’s Choeung Ek district, with a length of 2,000 meters and a diameter of 500 mm connecting the Boeung Trabek Pumping Station.

The treatment station has a capacity to filter 5,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, the statement said. Its construction, which will take approximately 32 months, will begin by the end of 2020.

In addition to the construction, the project will also provide technical assistance for strengthening capacity of operational staff and maintenance of the station as well as financial management.

It is the first project in Phnom Penh that will complement the flood protection project and improve the drainage system in Phnom Penh, which is also funded by Japan. / Ek Taing Vida / Khmer Times
