The first Yellow Cab Pizza branch here had its soft opening last week at the Eden Garden Mall in Phnom Penh, making the Kingdom the second country in Indochina to host a branch of the Filipino pizza chain. The company has yet to announce the schedule for its grand opening.

Yellow Cab Pizza already has a presence in Vietnam. In 2017, Max’s Group Inc (MGI), Yellow Cab Pizza’s mother company, signed an agreement with Blue Star Food Corp that will establish 12 Yellow Cab Pizza stores in Vietnam within five years.

It is believed that Cambodia’s growing market and economy factored in MGI’s decision to establish a presence in this Kingdom of 16 million people. Cambodia’s economy has grown by an average of 7 percent in the last half-decade, making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

This new development is also part of a growing trend of Filipino businesses investing or looking to establish a presence in the Kingdom. The trend has accelerated in recent years as a result of more and better air connections, among other factors.

According to list compiled by the Philippine Embassy, there are currently more than 50 Filipino companies operating in the Kingdom. These include such prominent names as Philippine Air Lines, Penshoppe, San Miguel Brewing Intl, Petron Corp, Liwayway Marketing Corp, Davies Paints and United Laboratories.

The number is expected to increase further with the imminent signing of a double taxation agreement (DTA) between the two countries. A DTA will allow organisations or citizens of the Philippines and Cambodia who are working in another country to only pay taxes in their home country.

Cambodia’s young population also makes it a good market for pizza chains and related establishments.

Yellow Cab Pizza will be competing with established names in Cambodia such as Domino’s Pizza of the United States (US), Pezzo Pizza of Singapore and Thailand-headquartered The Pizza, which has a strong presence in Phnom Penh and many other provinces across the Kingdom.

News of Yellow Cab Pizza’s entry into Cambodia was greeted with excitement, especially by members of the local Filipino community. There are currently more than 5,000 Filipinos living and working in Cambodia.

“This will lead to other pizza companies improving their products,” said Filipino expat Nathaniel Sy Gan, indicating the high-quality products and services that Yellow Cab Pizza bring.

Yellow Cab Pizza was founded in 2001 and has more than 100 branches in the Philippines and other parts of the world, including the US, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, China, Vietnam and Oman. In addition to a wide selection of pizzas, Yellow Cab Pizza also serves fried chicken, pasta, sandwiches and desserts./ Jose Rodriguez T. Senase / Khmer Times  Share:
