JAKARTA – Indonesia has refused entry to 118 foreigners, including two from Singapore, in a bid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The measure was applied from Feb 5 to 23 at all immigration gates across the country, said Mr Arvin Gumilang, the spokesperson for Indonesia’s immigration office, in a statement on Sunday (Feb 23).

SINGAPORE – There are no new cases of the coronavirus disease, said the Health Ministry (MOH) on Sunday (Feb 23), meaning that the total number stays at 89.

Meanwhile, two more have been discharged. A total of 51 have fully recovered since the first case was confirmed a month ago, on Jan 23.

Most of the 38 confirmed cases who are still hospitalised are stable or improving. Five are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

As of noon on Sunday, MOH has identified 2,812 close contacts, with 908 currently quarantined. Another 1,904 have completed their quarantine.

TOKYO – Japan’s Emperor Naruhito vowed to work with the public to overcome a range of challenges from climate change, child abuse, poverty and the better integration of minority groups as he turned 60 on Sunday (Feb 23).

This would have been a landmark celebration for the Emperor, his first birthday since taking over the Chrysanthemum Throne from his 86-year-old father Akihito, who is now Emperor Emeritus, in May last year to herald the dawn of the Reiwa (beautiful harmony) era.

SEOUL – Since last Thursday (Feb 20), Singaporean Thea Martin has been holed up at home with her husband and two-year-old son in South Korea’s south-eastern city of Daegu, cooking their own meals and  keeping updated on the latest news about the coronavirus outbreak.

The streets have emptied out as South Korea struggles to contain a community spread of the virus linked to the Daegu branch of a secretive church. The country raised its virus alert level to the highest red on Sunday (Feb 23).

MILAN- Italy battles surging outbreak as cases rise over 100; third death reported.

MILAN (REUTERS, AFP) – Italy raced on Sunday (Feb 23) to contain the biggest outbreak of coronavirus in Europe, sealing off the worst affected towns and banning public gatherings in much of the north as the number of those infected jumped above 100.

An elderly cancer patient became the third person known to be infected with the coronavirus to die, health officials said on Sunday. The woman had been in hospital in Crema, located in Lombardy, where most cases of infections have been reported.
