RM80 mln runway upgrade for Sandakan Airport a boon for economy
SANDAKAN: The new terminal building for Sandakan Airport and the RM80 million upgrading project of the Sandakan Airport runway is expected to boost Sandakan’s economic growth in the near future.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the project to upgrade the Sandakan Airport runway is a present for the people of Sabah, especially Sandakan, as it was not listed in the 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK11).
“Although the runway project was not listed in the 11th Malaysia Plan, I have ordered the Ministry of Transportation and Economy Planning Unit to immediately approve the project.
“The existing radar system (of the airport) must also be upgraded and the appointed contractor must carry the project out starting June, not at the end of the year.
“It is our hope that with this new terminal building and the soon-to-be upgraded runway of Sandakan Airport, more large airplanes from China, Korea or Japan can be land here,” Najib said at the launching ceremony of Sandakan Airport’s new terminal building.
