Brunei bowling team look to add to medal haul

BRUNEI Darussalam national para ten pin bowling team will be looking to add to their medal collection in the upcoming 9th Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur, which will be held from September 17-23.

A total of 10 athletes were selected namely Muhammad Jamary Danggat, Saidin bin Haji Awang Damit, Kamarul Ariffin Haji Abdul Ghaffar, Khairul Anwar bin Haji Abdul Ghaffar, Muhammad Hadi bin Nirwan, Haji Aliuddin bin Haji Md Nafiah, Haji Noor Ishanuddin bin Haji Noor Kaseh, Nor Hanizawanney binti Yaakub, Sallehuddin bin Haji Md Seruji, and Matius Akim.

Four of the ten athletes have been categorised as visually impaired with two each categorised as intellectual impaired, wheelchair and ambulant.

The pair of Saidin and Kamarul Ariffin will be defending their title in the Mixed Doubles when they clinched the gold medal in the previous edition in Singapore.

This year’s edition will feature new faces in the national line-up namely Khairul Anwar, Haji Aliuddin, Muhammad Hadi and NorHanizawanney.

In the context of para ten pin bowling, the Mixed Doubles event is commonly referred as competitors who are competing in same or different classes for instance TPB2 and TPB2 or from other classes.

The national para ten pin bowling team was first formed in 2011 and made their competitive debut in a regional competition in the Asean Para Games in Surakarta, Indonesia in the same year.

As the number of athletes grew, the national team returned competitively in the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea where they won bronze in the Mixed Team event through the trio of Muhammad Jamary Danggat, Kamarul Ariffin and Saidin.

Other achievements also included Saidin winning bronze in the TPB2 event in the Men’s Singles and the trio of Muhammad Jamary, Kamarul Ariffin and Saidin claiming bronze in the Men’s Trios event, both in Singapore.

The bowling event was not included when Myanmar hosted the Asean Para Games in 2014.

Other top competitions that the national para ten pin bowling team have joined are the IBSA Tenpin Bowling World Championships where they achieved a personal best and the Asia Para Tenpin Bowling Federation (APTBF) Bowling Championships in Manila, Philippines.

The Manila meet also served as part of their overseas preparations towards the much-anticipated 9th Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur.

The national team trained extensively in the country for the last few months as they bid to win medals in a number of categories.

Similar to athletics and cycling, a selection process was also held with 16 athletes originally taking part last May.

Individuals who attended the selection process was provided a game to measure their capabilities and the main criteria of selecting the athletes were identifying potential to win medals as well as comparing the standards that have been set in Singapore.

The officials in the national para 10 pin bowling team included Salim bin Putih as manager and Mohd Aidil bin Jahali and Ahmad Athery Haji Abdul Samad as co-coaches.

The competition dates for ten pin bowling is between September 19-22 at the Sunway Pyramid, Subang Jaya.

The national para 10 pin bowling team will be leaving the country tomorrow and will be completing their final stages of their preparations in Kuala Lumpur.
