She is the first Filipino to have competed in the said beauty pageant which consists of contestants with Hispanic heritage. Despite a non-Spanish contestant, Winwyn still took home the title.
Winwyn used the help of a translator during the question and answer portion, where she was asked how she would promote the Hispanic-American culture with language barrier.
Confident yet graceful, Winwyn said, “Language can be learned but the will and determination to contribute something to the organization cannot. It has to come from the heart and it has to be natural. I believe that kindness is a universal language, that if you treat people with tolerance, patience and love, you will understand each other. The Hispanic culture is not about language only. It is about love for God, love for country, love for history and culture, and love for family. And as a Filipino with a unique heritage, I have instilled that I am ready to promote the Hispanic culture not just in Asia but in the whole world. It is time to celebrate the Hispanic culture. It is meant to be celebrated.”
Winwyn was already showing her potential to win even before the coronation. She won special awards, including being first runner-up in the Miss Personality category, a finalist in the Best Smile and Miss Silhouette categories, and won the Ipanema Girl award. Winwyn was also in the top 3 in the Traditional Costume category, where she wore a Pintados-inspired golden costume designed by Edwin Uy.
Being the dancer that she is, Winwyn also impressed everyone with her dancing skills on a Bolivian TV show. The actress is also the niece of former Miss International Melanie Marquez.
Before the coronation, Winwyn posted on Instagram to recall her journey and thank everyone for their support.
“It’s such an honor to be the first Reina Hispanoamericana Filipinas. Mamaya na po ang coronation night and maraming salamat sa lahat na nag message sa akin, lahat na nag cocomment sa lahat ng tumawag maraming salamat po!. Sobrang overwhelming ang supporta niyo kahit first time natin mapasama sa pageant na ito. Kung alam niyo lang kung gaano kahirap mapasama sa RHA pero lahat ng pagod lahat talaga worth it dahil sa supporta and tiwala niyo. I will give my best and sana makuha natin. LABAN PILIPINAS,” she posted .
It is a back-to-back crown for the Philippines as Karen Ibasco was also named as Miss Earth 2017 on Saturday evening in Mall of Asia Arena.
