The train accident that just occurred in DuPont, WA shows more than ever why our soon to be submitted infrastructure plan must be approved quickly. Seven trillion dollars spent in the Middle East while our roads, bridges, tunnels, railways (and more) crumble! Not for long!

    Mayor had voiced safety concerns

Earlier this month, the mayor of Lakewood, Wash., expressed safety concerns about the new rail plan that required the tracks to be upgraded to allow Amtrak’s high-speed trains.
“Come back when there is that accident and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements,” Mayor Don Anderson told Washington state transportation officials. “Or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens.”

I live in Seattle and drove under this bridge just last week. The reports I’m hearing is the train was going 81 mph at last report. Where it went off there is a fairly sharp curve. This was the trains inaugural run which was proposed widely here in this area. Perhaps it was traveling too fast. But I am just speculating but it sure seems to be a possibility.

Some people are saying the accident was caused by a truck on the tracks but look at the pictures. The track is elevated well above the road. Perhaps the confusion is that when the train car fell it hit a truck.

Our train system infrastructure is antiquated. The Amtrak trains are old, slow, and depend on tracks built years ago along side freeways. The train that derailed would be considered a “slow train” in Europe. The Germans have a high speed train called “ICE”. The “ICE” train connects the country and is very reliable and safe. The auto industry does not want a system like in Europe because they want to sell cars. While stationed in Germany, I loved getting on the trains to see the country. The Germans are way ahead of us in mass transportation, and lots of it is automated and efficient. We have a system that is designed for car travel across the country.
