The House Justice committee, voting 38-2, on Thursday found probable cause to impeach Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Rep. Reynaldo V. Umali, chairman of the House Justice Committee said that the committee conducted 15 probable cause hearings on Sereno’s impeachment for almost nine months.

Sereno is being accused of culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, corruption, and other crimes.

Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas said that the Chief Justice was given all the chance to air her side but chose not to.

Sereno’s impeachment complaint is endorsed by 25 House members. The committee has 51 regular members and 33 ex-officio members.

The Articles of Impeachment will be submitted on March 14 to the House Justice Committee afterwhich they will decide as a body whether to resume the hearings or not.
