THE US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam yesterday hosted a Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) at the D’Anggerek Serviced Apartment, for local students about to embark on further studies in the United States.
Students, parents, school counsellors, alumni members, representatives from the Ministry of Education (MoE) and scholarship-giving bodies attended the orientation.
The event began with a welcoming speech by Public Affairs Officer at the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam Catherine E Muller congratulating the students who had been enrolled into US universities or colleges for the 2018-2019 academic term.
“As you transition into one of the most important and memorable chapters of your lives, I encourage you to take advantage of every positive opportunity that comes your way!” she added.
The orientation sessions included ‘Understanding the student visa application process and maintaining your student visa status in the United States’ by Lim Ming Chuan, a Consular Assistant at the US Embassy Consular’s Visa Office; and a sharing session with US university alumni.
During the PDO, US-bound students and their parents also had the opportunity to meet with students currently studying in the United States, as well as members of the Brunei-US Association (BUSA), who offered tips on how to prepare for the American academic, social and cultural environment.
The US Embassy’s Consular Section also spoke to participants on student visa applications, along with tips on travelling and arriving in the United States.
