2018 ASIAN GAMES: JAKARTA – No Delays in Payment for Asian Games Athletes, Says Indonesian Contingent Chief

Jakarta. Indonesia’s 2018 Asian Games contingent chief, Comr. Gen. Syafruddin, said on Thursday (02/08) that all issues regarding allowances and payments to the athletes competing in the event will be sorted out before its opening ceremony on Aug 18.
Delayed payments for years have marred Indonesia’s elite sports management.
“Allowances for athletes and coaches are assured, you don’t need to worry about it. They will be transferred directly to their bank accounts,” he said.
Last year, the Ministry of Sports dissolved its own high-performance sports task force Satlak Prima, after an elite athlete disclosed that she had not received her money for eight months. Satlak Prima was responsible for distributing the allowances.
Eki Febri Ekawati, who won the gold medal in the shot-put during the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, said she even had to pay herself for the accommodation during the event in Kuala Lumpur.
Indonesian elite athletes receive monthly allowances ranging from Rp 8 million ($552) to Rp 15 million, depending on their achievements.
The ministry said in January that it had allocated Rp 735 billion for the athletes who will represent Indonesia at the Asian Games.
Syafruddin earlier announced that those who win gold will be awarded Rp 1.5 billion rupiah each and offered to become civil servants, members of the military or police.
