PHOTOGRAPHY: Photos of the day – Play Therapy Helps Children Overcome Trauma of Lombok Earthquake
.
Among the thousands of people affected by the recent series of powerful earthquakes that struck Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara are many children struggling to understand what had happened to them and their families. Some are also dealing with the loss of family members or friends.
To help the children overcome their trauma, members of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) are involving them in several activities.
For example, soldiers have installed a ball pit inside the evacuation center where the children can play. They are also encouraged to participate in religious activities, which play an important role in the healing process.
The youngest victims take part in art therapy sessions during which they draw pictures to give expression to their thoughts and feelings.
In the afternoons, soldiers also involve the children in outdoor activities that require teamwork. These activities are all designed to help the children cope with their circumstances.
