Jakarta. The government estimates that it has spent less than the initial state budget allocation on hosting the 2018 Asian Games, thanks to revenue from sponsors and the sales of merchandise, an official said on Monday (03/09).
The government has set aside Rp 24 trillion ($1.6 billion) in the annual state budget between 2015 and 2018 for preparations and hosting the event, Purwanto, budgeting director for human development and culture at the Ministry of Finance, told reporters in Jakarta.
“That’s the budget allocation, but the actual spending was less than that,” he said.
The budget included Rp 13.6 trillion for renovation and construction of sports facilities in Jakarta and Palembang, North Sumatra, between 2015 and 2018, while Rp 8.1 trillion was set aside for organizing the event.
Another Rp 2.1 trillion was set aside for athletes’ training and bonuses.
“Cultivating an athlete requires long period of training in the country or abroad. This Asian Games result will be our springboard for the 2020 Olympics,” Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said on her Instagram account.
Indonesia had the best result ever in an Asian Games this year with a total of 31 gold, 24 silver and 43 bronze medals. Gold medalists received cash bonuses of Rp 1.5 billion before tax, while silver medalists received Rp 500 million and bronze medalists Rp 250 million.
Erick Thohir, president of the Indonesia Asian Games Organizing Committee (Inasgoc), said last week that the organizers managed to reduce reliance of state funding after receiving Rp 800 billion from domestic and international sponsors.
The committee also raised some revenue from the sales of tickets and merchandise, Inasgoc treasury director Gatot Dewa Broto, who is also a spokesman for the Ministry of Youth and Sports, said in Jakarta on Monday.
A financial report on this year’s Asian Games, which will be audited by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), is expected to be completed by April 2019, Purwanto said.
