OP ED EDITORIAL & CARTOONS: MANILA – Furies resurrected -By The Daily Tribune’s Editorial Board
An accused drug trafficker, a suspected poll cheat and a dishonest lawyer who usurped the Chief Justice’s post are now being hailed by the yellow as their new spin-off of the “Three Furies,” who in the Greek mythology are the Three Goddesses of Vengeance.
The yellow trio are detained Sen. Leila de Lima, Vice President Leni Robredo and ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno. Based on the yellow oust-Duterte plot, the group will lead the propaganda offensive against President Rody Duterte.
It was Edwin Lacierda, Noynoy’s yellow mouthpiece, who coined the term “Three Furies” referring to then Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales and erstwhile Commission on Audit chairman Grace Pulido Tan.
The designated yellow priestesses were tasked to lead the application of selective justice on political opponents of former President Noynoy Aquino while shield their allies.
The “Furies” produced Noynoy’s political trophies who are former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who was detained for almost the entire stretch of Noynoy’s six-year term on a string of charges none of which was proven in court.
Noynoy and his muses also actively worked for the impeachment of former Chief Justice Renato Corona, who is an appointee of Arroyo and pressured Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez to resign by threatening her with an impeachment.
The biggest catch in the selective justice dragnet under Noynoy were former opposition Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon Revilla Jr. as a result of the Palace-scripted P10-billion Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam.
De Lima played a pivotal role in Noynoy’s selective justice push through the double standard she employed particularly the PDAF scam.
She was lethargic in prosecuting allies of Noynoy but was quick as a bullet in employing the entire government apparatus against political opponents.
The Integrated Bar of the Philippines even issued a statement then calling the attention of De Lima on the delay in the filing of PDAF cases where several administration allies, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Director General Joel Villanueva who is now senator, Centrist Party Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro and former Lakas Rep. Rachel Arenas of Pangasinan, were implicated.
San Beda College of Law Graduate School dean Fr. Ranhilio Aquino also posed a question to De Lima: “Why were some hurriedly prosecuted and why does it take so long to conclude investigations against the President’s allies? Has any high-profile ally like (former Budget Secretary Florencio) Abad been prosecuted?”
Abad was included on the so-called Napolist submitted by alleged PDAF scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles to De Lima along with her supposedly tell-all testimony.
It later on turned out De Lima had good reasons for blindly following the yellow directives on selective justice as she is now accused of benefiting from the unrestrained narcotics trade during Noynoy’s term.
The revived “Furies” are now following the same line of destructive politics. De Lima, from her jail cell, said Rody was behind moves to bump off Robredo from the vice presidency and installing his ally former Sen. Bongbong Marcos in her stead.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque attributed De Lima’s allegations to hallucinations of a person locked up in prison.
De Lima’s allegations were loaded with yellow malice since these were timed with the assumption of Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo de Castro who Rody chose as replacement for the disgraced Sereno.
De Lima, in effect, is accusing the Supreme Court under De Castro of being Rody’s lapdog since Marcos has a poll protest case with the Presidential Electoral Tribunal which is composed of SC justices and led by the new Chief Justice.
Sereno is expected to take over the vilification of Rody during the election period which starts after the filing of certificates of candidacy next month. She will likely lead the administration slate for the senatorial race.
The yellow mob is relying on the three priestesses to boost the flagging chances of its bets for next year and keep the pressure on Rody to boot.
With their bad credentials, the “Furies” carry the kiss of death on the yellow 2019 hopefuls.
