Dozens of farmers from the Kendeng Mountains in Central Java staged a protest in front of the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Monday (24/09) against a decision by the province’s governor, Ganjar Pranowo, to issue a permit to state-owned cement producer Semen Indonesia.

The protest coincided with National Farmer’s Day, commemorated on Sept. 24 every year – the date on which Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president, promulgated the Agrarian Law.

The farmers claim that limestone mining operations in the Kendeng Mountains are damaging the environment and reducing their cultivation areas, thus threatening their economic survival.

Some protestors also demanded that the government implement fair agrarian reform to guarantee their rights and ensure that there will be enough land for cultivation.
