Jakarta. Indonesia has reiterated its concern over the murder of exiled Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and called for a transparent and thorough investigation.

“Indonesia is urging for the investigation to be conducted transparently and thoroughly,” Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said after a meeting with her Saudi Arabian counterpart, Adel bin Ahmed al-Jubeir, in Jakarta on Tuesday.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo conveyed a similar message during Al-Jubeir’s courtesy call at the State Palace on Monday.

Khashoggi, 60, disappeared on Oct. 2 after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to collect marriage documents.

The Saudi government has given several conflicting accounts about Khashoggi’s killing, initially denying his death and claiming that he had left the consulate alive.

Riyadh finally admitted on Saturday that he was killed inside the consulate.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Prosecution Office, which is leading the investigation in conjunction with Turkish authorities, said in a statement that a discussion Khashoggi had at the consulate led to “quarrels and an altercation, which tragically resulted in his death.”

“As a consequence, 18 people were detained for questioning and six senior government officials were dismissed from their positions,” Al-Jubeir told reporters in Jakarta.

He noted that these findings are “the first step of a long journey” and said high officials from his country, including King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, are committed to seeing that the investigation is “thorough and complete, that the truth is revealed and those responsible will be held to account.”

Al-Jubeir added that his government would establish procedures and mechanisms “to ensure that something like this can never happen again.”

Saudi Arabia said developments in the case would be communicated through the public prosecutor’s office.

The kingdom has faced increasing international pressure to reveal what truly happened to Khashoggi.

Britain, France and Germany issued a joint statement on Sunday, condemning the killing and demanding “credible facts” from the Saudi investigation.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan meanwhile said there were strong indications that Khashoggi’s killing was planned and that he was killed in a “savage way,” Reuters reported.
