Asean Headline: YANGON- Rakhine CSOs want to help state’s recovery

U Zaya Kyaw, spokesperson of the group, said it comprises 50 representatives of CSOs across the state.

The group will meet with the committee this month on ways that it might contribute to the process, he said.

In October 2017, the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, chaired by the late United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan, presented to the Myanmar government its final report with 88 recommendations on improving the situation in Rakhine. The government says it has implemented 81 of the recommendations.

The commission report emphasised economic and social development, citizenship, freedom of movement, human rights and access to justice.

“In our view, the implementation committee has not been transparent, so we would like to work with them to improve that,” said U Zaya Kyaw.

He added that State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had said that for the development of Rakhine, there should be a mechanism that allows the government, people, private sector, local NGOs and CSOs to work together.

U Zaya Kyaw said civil society groups have had no role in carrying out programmes in Rakhine.

“Particularly in the verification of citizenship, there is a need for more transparency. We want to be part of the process,” he said.
