PHOTOGRAPHY: Photos of the day- “Traslacion 2019” – Filipino religious fervor awes American filmmaker By The Manila Times
AMID a multitude of frenzied devotees, a foreigner was seen in the crowd taking photos of different scenes and faces in front of Quiapo Church on Wednesday noon.
American filmmaker Brad Mirman, who has written for 15 films since the 1990s, said he had never seen anything like the sea of people until attending the annual “Traslacion” of the centuries-old image of the Black Nazarene.

“I guess I’ve never seen anything like this before,” he told The Manila Times.
Mirman was surrounded by a group of young Filipino photographers, one of whom he met in Puerto Galera a week ago, and who coaxed him to ditch his scuba suit and brave the procession of the Black Nazarene.
Mirman has written for films that starred Academy Award winners Julianne Moore and Willem Dafoe, and singer-songwriter Madonna.
“Its many people and their enthusiasm is unbelievable and to share it with them is great. I’ve never seen any religious gatherings like this, considering I’m not Catholic,” he said.

For the past several days, Mirman has been doing photo-walks with different photography groups and Filipino lensmen around Manila.
On Tuesday, he went shooting in the slums of Tondo, where he saw nothing but “kindness and spirit” from people, especially kids bearing the brunt of poverty.
“It is hard to believe… people living in little more than wooden crates[,] washing themselves out of buckets on the sidewalk and yet there is such great kindness and spirit to them,” he said.

The 65-year-old Los Angeles resident said he had seen a different world, after more than a week in Manila.
“It’s fantastic there’s so many different faces so many different people. It’s different from my world. Also, being a photographer, it’s a fantastic experience,” he said.
