Mr Thongloun highlighted the successful efforts of labour authorities in working with partners to train Lao workers.
He said Laos has been successful in protecting the benefits of workers over recent years with the majority of workers now having access to protection. Most workers are familiar with the Law on Labour and their rights in the workplace.
However, unemployment remains a challenge in Laos because some young people are poorly informed about the job market and the kinds of skills required. This is one reason why so many people in Laos are unemployed.
.
Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Dr Khampheng Saysompheng said labour and social welfare officials across the country would carry out the prime minister’s orders.
While attempts have been made to improve the quality of vocational and technical skills, these are not adequate to meet the needs of today’s job market and enable young people to find work.

“This meeting is important because it includes all sectors under the ministry. It involves unexploded ordnance issues, social welfare, and natural disasters. All of these directly affect local people and communities,” the prime minister said.
.
The meeting reviewed the past year’s work in carrying out policies on labour. The ministry will continue to build the capacity and knowledge of labour officials to ensure that service quality standards are raised to accommodate Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution.
“At the same time, we need to continue to develop the capacity, technical knowledge and skills of officials in related fields, especially as these fields continue to develop daily, Mr Thongloun said.
The ministry will continue to work with development partners for the protection of workers’ rights and benefits. Most employees do not enjoy sufficient protection of their rights under the Law on Labour.
The ministry wants more workers to seek legal services regarding their rights.
The ministry plans to carry out projects to support self-employment and household production, and train and employ unemployed people.
It also plans to develop and implement child protection and development service package plans, as well as improve discipline and productivity in all organisations and among all officials.
