SINGAPORE’S The Straits Times

The Straits Times says
Keeping Merdeka spirit alive

.
The decision to widen the beneficiaries of the Merdeka Generation Package to beyond the 500,000 Singaporeans born in the 1950s pays tribute to those who were also part of an extraordinary rite of passage in Singapore’s history. Like the Pioneer Generation Package, which acknowledges the contributions of Singaporeans born in 1949 or earlier and who received citizenship by 1986, the latest initiative on the Merdeka Generation – Singaporeans aged between 60 and 69 this year – recognises the contribution made by mostly ordinary people to the consolidation and evolution of an unsuspected national identity.

The pioneer generation lived in the territory that is Singapore today, but they did not inhabit a country. Many were immigrants who, or whose forebears, arrived on these shores as sojourners with hopes of returning to their ancestral lands to live better. It was the Merdeka Generation which oversaw Singapore’s transition from place to nation by taking its transplanted roots seriously enough to face life and take on the challenges of becoming a nation. That psychological transition included overcoming attacks on a nascent national identity from the left and right, by communists and communalists, on the way to independence in 1965. Since then, Singapore has been tested severely on economic, racial and religious grounds. But it has pulled through, underpinned by the belief that independence is for keeps.
