TV SERIES: HOLLYWOOD USA- Game of Thrones – The saying goes in High Valyrian: Valar morghulis. Valar dohaeris. (All men must die. All men must serve).
.
I don’t want to hear your weird contrarian takes about who will take the throne before Game of Thrones comes to an end: It’s going to be a woman, and you know it. Furthermore, it’s going to be Daenerys of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men deep breath Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons long exhale.
The final season of Game of Thrones finally premieres Sunday night, and I predict that the future of Westeros is highly female. Throughout the past seven seasons, we’ve seen every woman on this show rise from her own ashes like a freakin’ phoenix. Think about it: Each female lead either started with next-to-nothing, or lost everything they had and against all odds seized power anyway.

In season one Daenerys was raped, molested, and traded like property by her own brother. She has been kidnapped, beaten, and spat at by misogynistic men who (stupidly) underestimated her. I wish we could’ve done without all of this gratuitous and chauvinistic nonsense—but nevertheless, she persisted.

Same goes for Arya, who helplessly watched her father’s beheading and was left to fend for herself as just a kid. She fought tooth and nail to overcome her barely survivable circumstances. Her sister Sansa, like Daenerys, was raped, beaten, abused, traded, and married off like cattle. She returned home to Winterfell and rose to power anyway. Yara Greyjoy was overlooked and undervalued. She endured, she triumphed, and then was kidnapped again by her own uncle (but you know she’s going to crucify that fuckboi in season eight). Nearly every male character laughed in Brienne of Tarth’s face. She persisted. And then there’s Cersei: I mean, she literally slaughtered everyone who stood in her path and tried to subjugate her. That counts for something. At least she’s consistent!
Sure, the throne could go to Cersei—she has always found a way to hold the iron throne. But the seven kingdoms belong to Khaleesi—they’ve always been hers. Until the bombshell in season seven’s finale, when it was revealed that Jon Snow is actually a Targaryen and therefore the rightful heir to the throne, audiences have operated under the assumption that Daenerys was the real heir. So we followed her. As did every good guy in Westeros.

Every step of the way—from walking out of a fire unscathed, to hatching her dragons, to freeing the Unsullied—powerful men and women have followed her, like Jorah Momont, Dario Dohaeris, Tyrion Lannister, Lord Varys, Sir Davos, Yara Greyjoy. And lest we forget that Jon Snow himself bent the knee in season seven—sure, he didn’t know his true heritage at the time—but he called Daenerys his queen because he believed in her mission and her leadership. She wants change and civility, to restore peace to the realm.

This story has always been about people rising from nothing, people who deserve better. It’s always been about restoring peace and justice to Westeros. Throughout all seven seasons of Game of Thrones, we’ve been shown that girls don’t get to choose their way in Westeros but they push through anyway. Although it seemed that way in the first few seasons, Game of Thrones is not a show about men. It’s a show about the matriarchy. We’ve been watching how a matriarchy is built, and how a patriarchy and all its vile oppressions of women, is toppled. Like literally, toppled with dragons and swords and shit.

Jon Snow will not hold the Iron Throne. Jon is a hero, a leader, a peacekeeper, and unifier—yes. But Daenerys is the wueen. She’s his queen. And as the saying goes in High Valyrian: Valar morghulis. Valar dohaeris. Or in the common tongue: All men must die. All men must serve.
