Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s name was not on the ballot, but he was the biggest winner in the recently concluded midterm elections,which saw the utter decimation of the liberal opposition.

The opposition had hoped to leverage the elections as a referendum against Mr Duterte’s disruptive and controversial presidency. Instead, as the final results on May 22 confirmed, it suffered a crushing defeat as Duterte loyalists seized control of both Houses of the legislature.
