Jakarta. An explosion set off by a failed suicide bombing attempt occurred in front of a police shelter near a toll road exit in Kartasura, Central Java, late on Monday night, officials have said.

Police officers were busy monitoring traffic, which has been busy prior to the Idul Fitri rush, or mudik, when the blast was heard.

No one except the bomber was injured by the explosion according to a recent report from the crime scene, confirmed by police and the Central Java government office.

Wawan Purwanto, a spokesman for the National Intelligence Agency (BIN), told Metro TV the blast was caused by low explosives.

Central Java governor Ganjar Prabowo urged people to remain calm and let authorities do their job. Ganjar also implored the public to stop sharing photos of the bomber.

“People should remain calm, the authorities are handling [this]. The bomber is in police custody… he did not die from the explosion,” Ganjar told Metro TV.

The suspected bomber was the only person injured in the explosion, and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Rycko Amelza Dahniel told reporters they found residues of explosives on his body and clothing.

The police are currently investigating the scene for more details about the explosion, including what type of bomb was used.

“Officers from [National Police anti-terror unit] Detachment 88 and an anti-terror unit from Central Java Police are currently on the scene,” National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said.

He told reporters the blast happened at 10.20 p.m. after a man approached the Kartasura police shelter.

“We believe the explosion caused the wound in [the bomber’s] abdomen. He is currently being treated. The investigators have not questioned him yet,” Dedi said.

National Police Chief Tito Karnavian had warned officers on duty during the Lebaran holiday to remain vigilant to prevent terrorist attacks.

“The police chief has instructed us to wear body armor when we are on duty. Unarmed officers are also accompanied by armed personnel from Brimob [Police Mobile Brigade] and TNI [the Indonesian Military],” Dedi told Metro TV early on Tuesday morning.
