ESTABLISHED in 1959, St Angela’s Convent School (SACS) turned 60 years old this year. As an educational institution, Angela’s has maintained her reputation as one of the leading schools in Brunei Darussalam. With its anniversary theme, ‘Shining Bright, Soaring Higher,’ those who passed through the portal of the school have learnt what it is to be disciplined, tolerable, passionate, determined, loyal and polite. They have likewise formed good work habit and have valued good relationship with each other.

St Angela’s vision is to have an ‘Academic Excellence, Discipline and Tolerance.’ The mission of the school is to make the youth loyal to the state, equip them with knowledge and skills needed to face the challenges of the new millennium, make them aware of human values, respect the elders and encourage them to be creative and think positively.

Changes in the school have been made throughout the years. The ground floor was raised; school walls and poles were newly painted to blend in with the beautiful natural environment. During the first term holidays, classrooms were renovated and repainted. To ensure safety of everyone, the construction of concrete walls has been going on for weeks.

The changes were not only physically but also academically visible. Being a student in St Angela’s for more than a decade, the education system has been becoming fresh and sensational. The teachers let the students express their point of view, and let creativity inspire their sessions. Brainstorming and other fun activities are put occasionally to class to get the fun spirit in learning.

Proudly, St Angela’s has produced excellent students. To name a few, Savier Kong obtained a Top in Brunei Award in 2011 for his ‘O’ Level Examinations in Principles of Accounts. In 2017, Wong Kah Heng obtained Top in the World Award in Mathematics.

2018 was a glorious year for St Angela’s. First, Sharellyn binti Johnny won 1^stplace in the ASEAN Quiz 2108. Equally exciting and inspiring, Sharellyn was one of the three students who represented Brunei in the Regional ASEAN Quiz held in Bali, Indonesia in December 2018.

Then Ampuan Amirah Farahiyah binti Ampuan Haji Mohamad and Aaron Alvin Luis Chiong Jordan bagged the championship trophy for the National Science Show Competition 2018 organised by Oil and Gas Discovery Centre, Seria.

Another glory was obtained by Ampuan Amirah Farahiyah when she secured a 2^ndplace in BELTA Speech Competition.

Meanwhile, Jona Kong obtained 2^nd place in the National Scrabble Competition.

All of these laurels were achieved in 2018. Having internalised the school’s vision, mission and objectives, victory and success are indeed not out of our reach.

With the school reaching six decades of existence, St Angela’s alumni and alumnae will gather together to celebrate her anniversary on June 15, and reconnect with each other to reminisce past memories and renew their friendship. – Keziahjoy Naval Calimlim Year 11Arts
