“It estimates the severity of earthquakes in advance. Working with civil engineers, we assessed how much damage could be caused depending on the severity of an earthquake,” he said.
The Myanmar Earthquake Committee, Yangon Technological University, and the department cooperated on the assessment with the team, which started making ground measurements in June 2018.
Experts from the Earth Observation of Singapore researching natural disasters in Asia also gave courses to staff and officials of the department.
Based on an earthquake graph and data reports, experts can look for ways to preserve the area’s cultural heritage.
The graph was funded by the Archaeology and National Museum Department but outside experts helped for free, U Aung Kyaw Myat said.

If needed, measurements will be taken at other pagodas in Bagan, he added.
A powerful earthquake that struck Bagan in 2016 damaged 380 pagodas. The department is prioritising the maintenance of the Bagan pagodas.
In July, Bagan was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, 25 years after the ancient capital was first nominated. – Translated
