2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Indonesia Goes Down Against Malaysia in Qualifier
Indonesia suffered a 2-3 loss against rival Malaysia in their opening match in the second round of the 2022 World Cup qualifier at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Thursday night.
The national squad started off well, with No. 10, Stefano Lilipaly, controlling the play and making some great passes to Evan Dimas Darmono and Andik Vermansah.
Indonesia took the lead in the 12th minute, when prolific winger Saddil Ramdani made a direct pass to an unguarded Alberto “Beto” Gonçalves, who went on score.
However, Harimau Malaya came back with a goal by Mohamadou Sumareh in the 37th minute. Brazilian-born Gonçalves put Indonesia back in the lead two minutes later.

Trouble broke out in the second half, after Malaysia’s Syafiq Ahmad equalized. Members of the police and military had to intervene to restore order before the match could continue. This saw Malaysia closing the lid on Indonesia with Gambian-born Sumareh’s second goal in the 96th minute.
The two countries have faced each other in international competition 95 times over the past 62 years, with Indonesia having won 39 of the matches.
