The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has issued arrest warrants for nine former opposition party members over their involvement in an alleged plot to topple the government next month.

Sam Rainsy, who is currently in exile, has been vowing to return in order to restore democracy and human rights in the kingdom. He said he would return on November 9.

Rainsy recently launched a “nine fingers” campaign online to bolster support for his return, which the government considers a plot to stage a coup.

Prime Minister Hun Sen then said those who would join the campaign will face the law.

“Phnom Penh Municipal Court would like to inform the public that on October 2, an investigating judge issued warrants to arrest the nine accused: Sam Rainsy, Eng Chhay Eang, Mu Sochua, Ou Chanrith, Ho Vann, Long Ry, Men Sothavrin, Tioulong Saumura and Nuth Romduol,” a court statement issued last night said.
