Jakarta. South Korea’s LINE Plus Corporation will embark on an anti-hoax campaign in collaboration with the Associated Press, to curb the flow of fake news online.

“Taking ‘Stop Fake News’ as the theme, the campaign aims to help users improve their media literacy and create a safe digital environment,” LINE said in a press release received by the Jakarta Globe on Friday.

The 2019 AP Stylebook defines fake news as “falsehoods or fiction masked as news circulating on the internet.”

The campaign will be conducted through a series of animated educational videos that teach viewers to check the credibility of news sources before sharing it, and to identify fake news when they see it. The video is available in English, Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin, Japanese and Thai.

LINE and the Associated Press will also hold educational seminars with the same theme in Thailand, Taiwan and Indonesia in September.

The seminars will explain the consequences of spreading fake news and misinformation online. The Indonesian Anti-Slander Community (Mafindo), an anti-hoax civil society organization, is supporting the seminar in Indonesia.

LINE’s Indonesia chapter previously launched several programs, including a talk show on hoax news related to elections, to improve media and digital literacy. The company’s in-app news portal LINE Today also has a weekly edition titled “Beware of Hoaxes,” which summarizes the most prominent hoaxes of the week.

LINE has about 100 million users globally.
