30th SEA GAMES- ESPORT Day 5: Philippines edge Thailand in Dota 2 to claim second gold

The esports component of the SEA Games 2019 was into Day 5 on Monday (9 December) at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan, Manila.

Yahoo Southeast Asia looks at the results which saw Malaysia and Thailand net their first gold and the Philippines bring home a second.

Hearthstone

Malaysia’s Weng Kean “wkyew90” Yew beat Thailand’s Werit “Disdai” Popan 3-1 in the grand finals for Blizzard’s card game, taking home the country’s first gold medal at esports in the SEA Games.

Singapore took home the bronze medal.

Arena of Valor

Thailand’s Workpoint Fighting Fish first faced Vietnam’s Mocha ZD Esports in the lower bracket finals, and won the series 2-0 to achieve a spot in the grand finals.

Indonesia’s EVOS Esports awaited Workpoint Fighting Fish in the finals, where the Thai team managed to maintain their earlier momentum to win the series 3-0 comfortably.

The win meant Thailand secured their first esports gold medal.

Indonesia went home with the silver, while Vietnam was awarded the bronze.

Dota 2

Philippines’ Team Adroit went up against Team Thailand in the grand finals, in what was the longest series of the SEA Games esports yet.

The two teams seemed evenly matched, with Team Thailand pushing the hosts to the max in a best of five as they went back and forth on the scoreboard.

Despite a bad start to Game 5, Team Adroit was able to recover with the help of the supportive home crowd and win the second esports gold medal for The Philippines, edging the Thais 3-2.

Team Thailand were given the silver while Vietnam’s 496 Gaming was awarded their third esports bronze medal for SEA Games 2019./
