Editorial- A disturbing development

Since the Luzon-wide lockdown began, Filipinos were told that they should stay home to stay safe from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Now that advice seems suspect, given reports that hospitals in Metro Manila, already stretched to their limits, are sending home patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 for self-quarantine.“In the past, when you test positive, they pick you up, they take you in into a facility,” said Mayor Joy Belmonte, who says she knows of at least three COVID-19 patients who were asked to go home in Quezon City. “But what happens now is that when you test positive, you’re just told that you just go home and you self-quarantine.”

EDITORIAL – Abuse of authority

Making good on the government’s threat, law enforcers arrested on Sunday a barangay captain in the Lanao del Sur town of Marantao. Police said Barangay Mantapoli captain Cassar Abinal was selling community quarantine passes for P20 each to residents.

The crisis is bringing out the best – and the worst – in people, with all the epal and sawsaw politicians crawling out of the woodwork. This should come in handy when we pick our next set of officials in 2022.

The quarantine has been painful enough for the public. Abusive officials tasked to implement it will only discourage the kind of public cooperation that is indispensable in a unified fight against the COVID-19 contagion.
