.
Jakarta. The spread of coronavirus in Indonesia has yet to slow down with 103 new positive cases reported over the past two days, bringing the country’s total to 893, the government announced on Thursday.
This is the second time the number of new cases on a single day has hit triple digits.
Only four patients recovered on Thursday, while 20 more died to take the country’s death toll from Covid-19 to 78, more than double the total recoveries, according to Achmad Yurianto, the spokesman for the government’s Covid-19 Task Force.
“Most of the cases continue to occur in Jakarta. But we noted a significant growth in South Sulawesi, where there are 14 new cases today alone,” Achmad said in a daily video conference in Jakarta.
Jakarta has 515 positive cases with 46 deaths as of Thursday.
Medical Workers at Increased Risk
Speaking separately, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said among the people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in the capital were 50 medical workers on the frontline of the battle against the virus.
“The number of infected medical workers is 50 in Jakarta alone. Two of them have died. The cases are found in 24 hospitals across Jakarta,” Anies said in a news conference at City Hall.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia- 235 Covid-19 cases reported today in nation’s biggest daily jump (Updated)
PETALING JAYA: A huge jump of new Covid-19 cases in the country today sees the total case tally breach the 2,000 mark.
The total number of cases now stands at 2,031, after an addition of 235 new cases today.
Health Ministry director general Datuk Noor Hisham Abdullah, at a press conference, said that 23 deaths have been recorded, including four today
“To date 45 cases are receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit and of those 32 require ventilators to breathe.”
Sixteen were discharged today, bringing the total number of patients discharged to 215.
Fatalities accounted for 1.1% compared to the international death rate which stands at 4.5%.
Noor Hisham said there were three main reasons why people are dying, firstly due to their age, secondly those with underlying health problems and finally, those who seek treatment when they are already severely ill.
He said 80 health professionals have so far tested positive for Covid-19 with 39 from the Teluk Intan Hospital cluster. As a precautionary measure, all hospital staff there have been asked to undergo testing for the virus.
“Those medical professionals who tested positive were not due to treating patients,” he clarified.
“They contracted the virus when attending weddings, gatherings or at other functions,“ he said.
For now, all suspected Covid-19 patients are being sent to government hospitals.
He said when the time comes where all ICU beds in government hospitals are full, the private sector will have to treat Covid-19 patients.
The MOH has emphasised the importance for health workers and hospital staff to follow safety procedures set by the ministry.
Standard Operating Procedures for treating Covid-19 patients have also been disseminated to private hospitals and clinics.
He reminds all Malaysians to keep to the MCO regulations and follow the ministry’s advice of maintaining social distancing and frequently sanitising one’s hands./ RAJVINDER SINGH /

YANGON- Myanmar confirms five virus case
The health ministry confirmed at 1:45am on March 27 two new cases of COVID-19 infections, bringing to five the total number of people suffering from the disease detected within the week.
One of the new COVID-19 patients is a 33-year-old Myanmar man from Mandalay, who is now an American citizen. He arrived in Myanmar from the United States on March 19 and developed symptoms of the disease, including fever, coughing, and tiredness, four days later. The patient, who is residing in Chan Mya Tharsi township, sought treatment at Kandawnadi Hospital on Wednesday and was immediately considered a patient under investigation.
The second COVID-19 patient is a 69-year-old citizen who lives in Mingalar Taung Nyunt township in Yangon. He went to Australia a month ago to seek treatment for nasal cancer. He stayed in Singapore for about four days and arrived in Yangon on March 14.
On March 25, Myanmar tested its third positive case.
A 26-year-old man from Insein township in Yangon Region returned from Britain through Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Thailand, on March 21.
He was quarantined at Insein General Hospital as required by the government. Officials sent his test sample to the National Health Laboratory on Tuesday, and he was declared positive for the virus at 1am on March 25 [Wednesday].
The ministry said the man is in good health but will remain under observation. The results of his test have been sent to the WHO-accredited laboratory in Thailand for validation.
The authorities sent two people to Yangon’s Wai Bar Gi Hospital who had been in close contact with the patient, and restricted the movements of eight family members who had contact with him.
On March 23 [Monday], the ministry announced the first two cases of COVID-19 in the country – a 26-year-old Myanmar man who had returned from Britain on Sunday, and a 36-year-old Myanmar man who holds a US green card and returned from the US on March 13. The two were placed in isolation at Wai Bar Gi Hospital and Chin State’s General Hospital, respectively.
State Counsellor tries to calm public
State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on Tuesday urged people not to panic over the Health Ministry’s confirmation on Monday of Myanmar’s first two cases of COVID-19.
She assured people that the deadly disease is curable and can be treated as long as they follow the advice of health professionals.
In a seven-minute nationally televised speech, Myanmar’s de facto leader called on people to stop panic buying, as some people had rushed to grocery stores after the ministry’s announcement late Monday.
“There is no threat of a food shortage, so panic buying just makes more people infected with the virus,” she said. “The government has no plans to close shopping centres and markets.”
“Let us overcome all challenges together with compassion,” she said. “Please just read the announcements of the government ministries. ZAW LINN NAING

DHAKA, Bangladesh- Confirmed, the country’s with virus total to 44, including 5 deaths.
Soldiers enforce 10-day shutdown in Bangladesh to slow virus
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Bangladesh deployed soldiers and police on Thursday to enforce the start of a nationwide 10-day shutdown to slow the spread of the coronavirus in the densely populated country.
The government also canceled all state programs, including parades, to celebrate the country’s Independence Day on Thursday.
The army said 290 teams of soldiers fanned out across the country to enforce the shutdown.
In Dhaka, a city of more than 10 million people, streets were empty and malls and roadside shops were closed. Only essential services such as vegetable markets and drug stores were allowed to operate.
TV stations showed security officials swinging batons to stop some pedestrians and people in rickshaws who were violating the shutdown.
The government has canceled all domestic flights and other transportation, including river ferries, until April 4. International flights are limited to London and Bangkok.
In thousands of villages across the country, shops and roadside tea stalls were closed.
Meerjady Sabrina Flora, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, said five more cases of the virus were confirmed, bringing the country’s total to 44, including five deaths.
Experts say Bangladesh, a nation of 160 million people, is at high risk of increased infections because hundreds of thousands of overseas Bangladeshi workers have returned home in recent weeks from Italy and other virus-affected nations. Many ignored government requests to stay at home after their return and attended social gatherings.
