Dear readers,

It is with great regret that we announce a temporary suspension to the print edition of our newspaper from Tuesday, March 31 until April 15.

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia- RM57m weekly losses

Petrol dealers dealt double whammy with MCO and price cuts, many facing closure

PETALING JAYA: Petrol dealers nationwide are looking at a staggering RM57 million in losses per week if the movement control order (MCO) is extended and pump prices drop yet again.

Petrol Dealers Association president Khairul Annuar Abdul Aziz attributed this to an expected 70% decline in sales, coupled with an expected drop in pump prices of about 15 sen.

He said these factors could cause each of the 3,804 petrol kiosk operators in the country to lose RM10,000 to RM15,000 per week, adding up to a national total of RM57,060,000.

He said petrol dealers have already lost 70% of their earnings since the MCO was put in place.

MANILA- Food shortage looms amid quarantine

Faced with a looming food crisis as the financial assistance promised by the national government has yet to reach them, people in various parts of Luzon are left to their own devices to stave off hunger.

Some residents have started eating corn fungus, while others have planted vegetables in once idle plots.

A local government plans to distribute repacked vegetable seeds to help households grow “survival gardens.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson said it was Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III who had proposed that the financial aid of P5,000 to P8,000 be given in cash.

Distributing assistance in the form of goods would flout the spirit of the Bayanihan law, which was crafted as an economic stimulus, according to Senate President Vicente Sotto III.

Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said on Saturday that aid in the form of relief goods or cash assistance should be distributed to families while maintaining social distancing. / Philippine Daily Inquirer.

SINGAPORE – It could take several years for the coronavirus to go around the world and run its course unless something happens to abort that process, says Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, adding that the world will have to brace itself for a long battle ahead.

In an interview on Sunday (March 29) with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria about Singapore’s much-lauded response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr Lee said he hesitates to call the Republic a “success story”.

In response to the suggestion that Singapore has contained the virus outbreak, he said: “I hesitate to talk about success because we are right in the midst of a battle, which is intensifying.”

He does not see the pandemic going away in a couple of months and expects it to spread to other parts of the world such as India, Africa, South-east Asia and Latin America.

“By the time it goes around the world, and then finally runs its course, I think that is several years, unless something happens to abort that process.”

Asked if the pandemic might lead him to postpone his decision to step down as Prime Minister, Mr Lee demurred: “I think this crisis keeps my hands full. Let us just focus on that for now.”
