Brunei Darussalam recorded only one confirmed COVID-19 case yesterday bringing the total number of persons infected in the country to 135.

Another COVID-19 patient made complete recovery and was allowed to return home. This brings the total number of recoveries in the country to 66.

Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar highlighted these details at a press conference yesterday.

The minister, explaining the only case recorded yesterday, Case 135, said he is a local man aged 43 who went to Malaysia on February 27 but did not attend the Tabligh gathering at Jamek Sri Petaling Mosque, Malaysia.

“The man then went to Makassar, Indonesia on March 10 to attend a Tabligh gathering there. However, the Tabligh gathering was cancelled and he was quarantined until March 24, 2020 by the Indonesian authorities. On March 25 he left for Jakarta and on April 2 embarked on a flight to Kuala Lumpur on-board Malaysia Airlines MH720. He returned to Brunei Darussalam on April 3 from Kuala Lumpur via Miri, Sarawak on-board Malaysia Airlines MH2574 (seated at 2G). He developed a cough on March 22,” Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham said.

He said one more case treated at the National Isolation Centre has recovered and was allowed to return home, bringing the total number of people recovered so far to 66.

“This means that 68 cases are still receiving treatment at the National Isolation Centre. Three are still in a critical condition and require respiratory assistance at the Intensive Care Unit of the National Isolation Centre, where one still requires heart / lung machine (ECMO) assistance. Meanwhile, the rest are in a stable condition,” the minister said.

He said 353 individuals are undergoing quarantine in accordance with the Infectious Diseases Act (Chapter 204) while 1,984 individuals have completed their quarantine and are in a stable condition.

Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham said as of yesterday, 243 individuals have completed their isolation period at facilities provided by the government and were allowed to return to their homes. Since early January 2020, a total of 7,801 laboratory tests for COVID-19 have been conducted, leading to a ratio of one in 56 residents in the country tested for COVID-19.

According to healthinfo.gov.bn, the breakdown of cases shows 108 in the Brunei-Muara District, 23 in the Belait District and four in the Tutong District. There are no cases in the Temburong District.

MANILA, Philippines (Update 2, 5:57 p.m.) — The Department of Health on Saturday confirmed 76 more local cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), bringing the official tally to 3,094 from the previous count of 3,018.

The local COVID-19 death toll now stands at 144 after the Health department announced 8 new fatalities.

Five new recoveries were also announced, bringing the total count to 57.

Meanwhile, 1,349 have tested negative for the disease, while another 898 have pending results.

Based on the latest Health department data, at least 5,341 Filipinos have been tested for COVID-19.

Data scientists from the University of the Philippines project the virus will infect between 600,000 and 1.4 million individuals in the country, with 80% from Metro Manila.

The implementation of the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon entered its third week. But the national government has not yet reached a decision on whether to extend or lift the quarantine across Luzon and parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles on Saturday said the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases has already approved the guidelines which will be considered in the decision.

Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr., chief implementer of the national policy against COVID-19, announced Thursday evening that the government is planning to conduct a mass testing starting April 14.

In a press briefing Saturday, Healthy Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vegeire said that mass testing only applies to those at risk of COVID-19. They include symptomatic persons under investigation, persons under monitoring, vulnerable individuals like healthcare workers and those with underlying conditions.

The Health department also aims to test more than 3,000 people per day starting April 14, Vegeire added.

Since COVID-19 emerged late last year, around 1.1 million people have fallen ill. Almost 60,000 people have died. — with report from Gaea Katreena Cabico /

SINGAPORE – There were 75 new cases of Covid-19 infections in Singapore as of noon on Saturday (April 4), in the largest single-day spike announced by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Of the new cases, 69 are local cases with no recent travel history abroad. This brings the total number of cases to 1,189.

Four new coronavirus clusters have also been identified. Three of them are dormitories – Sungei Tengah Lodge, Toh Guan Dormitory and Cochrane Lodge II.

The other cluster is located at The Orange Ballroom, a wedding venue at Tanjong Katong Complex in Geylang Road.

Only six of the new cases were imported cases with a recent travel history to Europe, North and South America and Asean.

Forty of the 69 new local cases are linked to previous cases or clusters, while 29 cases are unlinked, and contact tracing efforts are ongoing, said MOH.

MOH said on Saturday that more patients have been linked to five existing clusters.

Seventeen new cases were added to the cluster at S11 Dormitory @ Punggol, which has a total of 41 confirmed cases now.

One more case was linked to the cluster at Westlite Toh Guan dormitory , which now has a total of 18 confirmed cases.

Three more cases were linked to the cluster at a construction site at Project Glory, which has a total of nine confirmed cases now.

Four more cases were linked to the cluster at Mustafa Centre, which has a total of 19 cases now.

Two more cases were linked to the cluster at Keppel Shipyard, which has a total of six cases now.

The number of new imported cases has continued to be lower than locally transmitted ones prompting new elevated measures.

MOH said contact tracing is underway for 145 locally transmitted cases to establish any links to previous cases or travel history to affected countries or regions.

In a wave of new sweeping measures, the Government implemented a “circuit breaker” to pre-empt escalating coronavirus infections with most workplaces closed from Tuesday and all schools moving to full home-based learning on Wednesday, among other restrictions.

Earlier on Saturday, MOH announced Singapore’s sixth death from the virus. The patient, an 88-year-old male Singapore permanent resident, had no recent travel history to affected countries and regions.

He was confirmed to have Covid-19 infection on March 29 and was admitted to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) a day later. The man was cared for in the intensive care unit since March 30. He developed serious complications and eventually died. He had a history of heart and kidney disease, cancer and diabetes.

He is a locally transmitted case.

.

To date, a total of 297 cases have fully recovered from the infection and have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities.

Of the 500 confirmed cases who are still in hospital, most are stable or improving.

MOH said 26 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Meanwhile, 386 cases who are clinically well but still test positive for the coronavirus are being isolated and cared for at Concord International Hospital, Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital and the Community Isolation Facility at D’Resort NTUC.

HÀ NỘI , Viet Nam- No new cases of COVID-19 reported

HÀ NỘI — For the first time in almost a month, Việt Nam has no new cases of coronavirus to report.

The National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced Sunday morning that nobody has tested positive overnight.

It is the first time the country has been able to record zero cases since March 6.

So far, the amount of people nationwide carrying the virus remains at 240. Of those, 149 are Vietnamese nationals who have returned home from overseas and 61 cases are connected to the Bạch Mai hospital in Hà Nội.

There are 69,266 people currently in quarantine. Among these, 1,268 people are being monitored at hospitals, 44,667 people are quarantined at centres or other establishments and 22,331 are self-quarantined at home.

In Hà Nội, the total number of samples tested by PCR, the most accurate way to detect the disease, is 8,886, none of which are positive.

And there is more good news.

The Ministry of Health said four COVID-19 patients in a serious condition have made positive progress.

Patient number 19 no longer needs Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) – a heart-lung by-pass machine, that pumps and oxygenates a patient’s blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest.  The patient was taken off the machine on April 4 after she tested positive for COVID-19 on March 26, 27 and 29.

Three other people have been weaned off ventilators over several days and are now practicing breathing on their own.

Among these, patient number 161 is 88 years-old and has other conditions including cerebral hemorrhage, high blood pressure, diabetes and aortic valve regurgitation.
